Here are a few images from SXSW. I didn't shoot too much because it's difficult with a beer in your hand. On Tuesday, my friends Mike & Sam's band, Warwick Foundation (named for the apartment complex all of them live in) played their first show ever at Paradise in the afternoon. They spent the weekend throwing the set together, came in, destroyed it, and then we all retired to the patio for celebratory beers in the sun. A pleasant afternoon.

A few hours later, I caught a metal show down the street. Several local acts opened for the mighty Kylesa, pictured above. I only shot this one frame as the adjacent mosh pit quickly ruined any plans I had for focusing on the band.

Wild Flag played an afternoon set in the Waterloo Records parking lot downtown. Waterloo had free sets every day, and it became a go-to spot for several reasons: nice weather, quality bands, beer-tent proximity, and manageable crowds. People were bringing their babies and slapping ear protection on them. Start 'em young, hell yes.

Wild Flag ripped through a 40-minute set, showing the boys how it's done quite nicely.

The venerable Cody Votolato, former Blood Brothers guitarist and current touring member of Telekinesis. Got the opportunity to meet him briefly and gushed some nonsense about how important his records have been in my adult life. Nice guy.

A search on Google Maps for "ghost towns near Austin" turned out to be wildly successful. My first attempt at digital night photography in almost three years, however, was not. I screwed up my exposures, badly. That goddamn histogram is so small! And the mosquitoes... anyway, I decided to go check out Manda, Texas, a town whose tiny population was decimated by the Great Depression. There are people who live in this area, but the town of Manda no longer exists. There is this one humble schoolhouse building, destitute among the fields, and an impressive Lutheran church down the road. I'm going to photograph that some day soon, for sure. It took me about an hour to get out here from Austin; I cranked up some old Neil Young, hit the eastbound highway, and promised myself a six pack if I got one satisfactory exposure. This one ain't bad, I guess.

I'm currently working on a project pertaining to the bizarre alien world that is Business Travel, using my trusty Rolleiflex and black & white film, a tried and true combination if there ever was one. The exposed film is piling up. More on this sometime in the next eight or nine months.

I got up at seven this morning and started scanning my color negs, which have been steadily accumulating since the beginning of December. I finished around 3:30 PM. These images (along with some of the shots from the fall and from Maine) fit together somehow... they are a series in my mind, and I have an idea of how and why they go together in my head but I am completely unsure of how to describe it, which means I'll just keep shooting. They are a combination of photographs of places and people that are familiar to me, and images that are the result of exploration and wanderlust. Some are both of these things.

This will never see the light of day as it was shot for testing purposes, but this is my friend Justin and his red hat in the workplace. The black mess at the bottom is parts of the tripod and the hole in the pano left by the tripod itself. This is the part of the office where the elevator dumps you and also where one might go to make a phone call. Note the color scheme. Viva Brasil.

This bottom one was shot with a Canon 10-22, as opposed to the Sigma 8mm fisheye I've been using for these other ones. Less warp but more shots needed. Also it's 180 degrees instead of 360, HDR of 15 shots (5 directions 45 degrees apart, 3 exposures each).

I have more of these... I shot a couple inside the factory with the 10-22 lens but have to mess with PTGui some more to get the stitching right.

Many thanks to Andy (pictured), who let me into the High Magnetic Pressure Lab (middle) and also onto the roof.

I'm excited about these. I've seen literally millions of photos like these in the last year and a half, in various stages of processing/disarray and I've always thought they looked sort of interesting in the 2-D form (they are meant to be wrapped, spherical panoramas in a viewer, a la Google Street View). This format gives me way more options than I'm used to dealing with, and there's a lot to think about as everything in the room is in the photo. While they aren't difficult to shoot or process, I have to be able to think about how it's going to look, which is very strange as this is obviously not the way my eyes see. Right now I've been lucky enough to stumble into a couple of rooms that are already totally fucking crazy... so I'm in search of interesting spaces to do this in. Tomorrow I'm shooting a diaper factory.

I got a new cell phone not too long ago that automatically stitches panoramas; been screwing around with it for a while... got a new job long enough ago that entirely revolves around panoramas, and I've been alternately bored to tears and learning something new for 18 months. I started shooting these for the company over the summer.

So I shot these the same way I would shoot something for work, besides cropping part of the ceiling and floor out, and of course, shooting a non-business setting and processing the image the way I wanted to. These are HDR panoramas, made from 24 exposures and a 360 degree rotation of the camera. This is the entire room, minus the middle of the floor and the middle of the ceiling. I like the idea of applying a technical, formulaic photography process that I learned at work to a more personal project with fewer limitations... these two are test panos, a chance to feel out some pirated software and see what I can do when I'm not staring at the clock.

The day after Memorial day, Greg and I drove south from Portland down to Eugene to visit Molly at her house in the woods. We got there just in time for drinks on the porch.

After dinner, Greg DD'd us to the nearest (only) bar in nearby Cottage Grove called the Axe & Fiddle. We met up with a few of Molly's friends from Aprovecho farm.
